Limerick City Tourist Guide Map
While in Limerick, Daniel felt inspired to write a poem of his own. The traditional limerick has a rhyming scheme of AABBA. Lines 1, 2, and 5 have 9 syllables each and lines 3 and 4 have 6 syllables each.
A blonde girl from Flor-duh once pondered,
To where in the world had she wandered.
Her breasts were a-plenty,
But pockets were empty.
Brains weren’t the only thing she squandered.
-Limerick by Daniel, inspired by Katie Lu
Limerick City was on our way from Shannon Airport to the Dingle Peninsula. Although many travel guides agree Limerick City is not a must-see or a highlight of Ireland, it is definitely a place worth checking out if you have the time, or like us, if you are driving through it.
Situated on an island in the Shannon River, Limerick City was founded by the Vikings in the 9th Century and later became known as King’s Island. In 1200, King John’s castle was built and still remains today as a museum. The war between the Jacobites and the supporters of William the Orange ended here with the signing of the well-known Treaty of Limerick in 1691. Over the centuries, the unrest and constant struggles of the Irish people caused destruction and reconstruction many times over.
The city was developed mostly during the 1700-1800’s, so Limerick displays much Georgian Era architecture and style–think Harvard University. Today, like the rest of Ireland, Limerick continues show economic growth and attracts a multicultural population. The blooming city contains a wide selection of restaurants and bars, retail centers and shops, an appreciation for the arts, and so much more. It was a lovely stop on our way to Adare, then down the road to Dingle.
