RESTAURANTS IN CHARLESTON
If you are in Charleston, you will eat very well. Perhaps, too well, but in a good way! Charleston has an ever-growing restaurant scene catering to any taste or any cuisine. This foodie destination is a magical place with so many flavors especially the southern local low country style. Our local tour guide admitted that many restaurants come and go because the bar is set so high–so if you fall below expectations, you will be driven out of business.
I’ve listed the restaurants and food from the Charleston trip.
LOW COUNTRY BISTRO, 49 South Market Street
Surprisingly, we stumbled across this restaurant strolling along the Historic Market area. I’m so happy we did because it really was amazing and our favorite restaurant from the whole weekend.
Low County Bistro is known for its chicken and waffles, but I decided against it.
Shrimp & Grits Appetizer
Corn bread side
Char-grilled Swordfish with butternut squash and goat cheese grits, bacon brussel sprouts
Market Jambalaya, Shrimp and tasso ham, with Carolina red rice
Bread pudding with ice cream, Dessert Special a Cinnamon bread pudding. Super Yum!
Everything was great! I give this place 5 Stars–I could eat here all the time. Reasonably priced and healthy portions.
BROWN DOG DELI, 40 Broad Street
Short Rib Grilled Cheese
Wes’ French Onion Grilled Cheese
Broccoli salad
Some of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had…Fast, easy, great service, good prices, fun atmosphere, and more! Exceeded expectations.
POOGAN’S PORCH, 72 Queen Street
Biscuits and honey butter.
Ribs and Mac in a mustard BBQ Sauce. This mustard BBQ sauce was extraordinary and complimented the ribs perfectly. If you go to Poogan’s Porch, you must order this!
Crispy Skin Snapper and cheese grit cake with pulled pork. The snapper was terrible… It has a strong fishy taste and it was over-cooked. It was also cold, so I asked for it to be remade. The second portion came out piping hot, but the fishy taste was even worse than before. I didn’t even eat half of it. The pulled pork and grits cake was delicious so I ate that and it filled me up. I do not recommend this entree.
Flourless chocolate cake. Very good. Met expectations.
All in all, Poogan’s Porch does have the Old World Charleston concept going for itself and the service was very good. It’s on the pricey side, so it fell below my expectations. There are so many great choices in Charleston that I don’t see myself coming back here again.
PENINSULA GRILL, 112 North Market Street
Very elegant. Good service. Good food.
Lobster 3-Way–Ravioli, Tempura, Grilled
Soup Sampler–Lobster and Corn Chowder, Butternut Squash, and Wild Mushroom Bisque. Out of the three soups, we enjoyed the Lobster and Corn chowder the best.
Grilled Salmon
Filet Mignon with blue cheese crust
Coconut Cake–it was pretty good, but did not exceed expectations like everyone says. I thought it was a little dry.
Peninsula Grill has a huge reputation in Charleston as being the best of the best. Unfortunately, both of us got sick later that night from the food. I’m not sure what happened because I have a stomach of steel. We called the next day to let them know and they denied responsibility and offered no apologies or remuneration. Also, in terms of value this was the most expensive meal we had in Charleston, and it did not live up to its good name or price tag. Two stars…below expectations.
TAZIKI’S
Chicken and pesto gyro
Lamb gyro
Tomato and cucumber salad–with feta
Greek potatoes-lemony, olive oil, fresh herbs
I give this Greek establishment Four Stars–Exceeded Expectations.
